Has anyone entered the Silverstone 24 hour event on the 14th/15th September??

I thought I'd set up this thread for those that have to chat about preparation and training, and for those that haven't to explain why they haven't!

It looks like a great event, and judging by all the charity partners on board lots of money will be getting raised! Take a look at their website - http://www.thesilverstone24.com/

I thought of doing this til I saw the £200 entry fee. It also depends on the number of riders on a relativley short circuit all at once. I'll see how it goes this year with a view to entering next. ( Or try the Mersey Roads 24)

That's what I thought too!

For those who think they can raise a lot more than the entry fee, some charities will pay the fee - see this post.

A nice sleight of hand.

It means that your sponsors are paying £180 on your behalf before anything enters their coffers. Even at five times the entry fee that's nearly a fifth of the money raised syphoned off before being allocated to charitable purposes.

I suppose the argument is that 80% of a lot is better than 100% of nothing!

Events like the Manchester 100 claim to be in aid of certain charities, but every penny of the entry fee goes to the organisers, sponsorship to raise money for the charities is separate and optional, and the charities pay up front for the privilege of being the 'official' ones!

I haven't entered for two reasons:
- It's very expensive
- Doing a long ride round a circuit, rather than riding from place to place on the roads, is psychologically a lot harder. It's much more tempting to pack in in the middle of the night when you are cold and tired if you are passing a support vehicle all the time than when you are, say, on Bryan Chapman, 200 miles from your car. And that gnaws away at your motivation...!

Just seen that this event has been cancelled (the announcement on the website is undated so it may be old news)

I'm not surprised - the £200 cost was high.

What I am surprised at is their stated 700+ entrants.
How many entrants were they looking for, if 700 wasnt enough?
1,000 cyclists all crammed onto Silverstone for 24 hours would have made for a very busy track, with the variable speeds of riders, especially in the small hours when people would have been tired and visability reduced.
