I have been looking for events to ride in 2011 and stumbled on this:

The Ride of the Falling Rain

Sunday 7th August

<quote>The approximate half-way point is at Ardbeg Distillery where you can stuff your faces with the fine fare available at the Old Kiln Cafe.</quote>

Any event that involves a distillery and cake deserves some support.

Somehow the name of this ride doesn't encourage me to make the journey

In terms of it being an 'event', how does if compare to the atmosphere of a sportive, audax or club run? A mate and I are thinking of travelling up next summer to ride this event but I would not wish to travel all that distance if it were just a glorified 'club run' with a brand name.

Sorry, don't have an answer. On the surface looks like a glorified 'club run' that said some of the best 'events' I have ever been on have been glorified 'club runs', CC Ecosse events for instance.

Because this ‘event’ does not have any pretentions of being something it’s not I find the prospect of riding around Islay, in company, very appealing.

I did this ride this year and made a weeks holiday out of the trip. It's very a very informal affair with timings and organisation very loose, But, having said that I found it very enjoyable as the weather was actually quite fine and the company friendly. You need to be prepared to hang around a bit and maybee even getting a little lost on the ride and don't get too hung about it being a little short of the 100. Have fun.
