I've just seen quite a reasonable-looking road bike on the back of a rag and bone man's wagon. I'd have had that and worked on it, instead it'll be going to Thompsons for scrap

Bah

EDIT: Anyone ever been tempted to offer the rag and bone man some actual rags or bones?

I'd have had a chat with the guy. The weight in scrap is pennies worth, he may have happily accepted a fiver for it.
I have approached gypsies collecting locally a while ago, they had a van load of metal with a couple of wheels sticking out. I asked if he'd let them go for a couple of quid but he said they were cream crackered.
I'm not sure if he was being honest or just couldnt be bothered, but he was friendly enough.

Kudos for seeing an actual Rag and Bone man!

Theres a fly tipping spot near my place, often see whats dumped there the night before being collected on the back of a flatbed the next day....

You also have to watch these guys too, they'll enter your garden and take your bike if it's not secure, if it's got metal in, it'll go!

I must have good ones, have about 6 that come round my way, I've often got bicycles at the side of the house but they all know that any scrap is always left at the top of the driveway, never had anything go that shouldn't

Yeah the thought crossed my mind but unfortunately I haven't been near a cashpoint in days. I don't tend to 'do' cash these days unless I'm going somewhere I know I will need it, I'm a bit of a chip and pin man...

I'm the same, it's awful when you're just browsing (But not intending to buy) through a market and you see something you want and you're like "...do you accept card? :3" ;p

Been there  Some shops too; there is a fab little old-style sweetshop in Yarm and was surprised that they didn't take plastic, when I went to buy a box of chocolates for my OH for her birthday a few weeks ago.

There's a recycling place next to my work that's just re-branded itself as a rag and bone man. We've made a few quid by having collections of clothing, furnishings and old electrical stuff then weighing it in. I've seen a few bikes in their yard, but so far they've all looked like they're worth more as scrap than as a bike!

Bah, just to add insult to injury (well not really), the chap who responded to my Gumtree ad has just turned up to buy my little girl's pink Hello Kitty BSO (her having moved onto a BMX, aged 5 ) so now I *do* have cash in my pocket. Sod's law
