judging by this picture of him from the bbc website.

And a husband, and a son, possibly a dad, too. I don't see why his choice of sport makes a difference, or does it just make it easier for you as an individual to identify with him? Perhaps it's like the news from Afghanistan - a soldier from XYZ town at the other end of the country was killed...aye well, that's being in the army...along with another from half a mile from where I live...oh what a shame, a local lad's been killed. It must be terrible out there. Interesting bit of psychology.

I had exactly the same thought when i saw that picture on the news this morning. Not just the fact that he was competing in a TT but the small glimpse of the classic stem and handlebars of an obviously beautiful bike, it just made it a bit more real for me.
I have been to a funeral before and something has been mentioned in the eulogy about a past hobby/interest that i was completely ignorant of and that has had a similar effect.

What's the point of this post? It was an interesting observation, and he seems to have ridden to a fairly high level. And yes, of course his choice of sport is the only reason why it would even be mentioned in this section of the forum - that's self-evident, and yes, of course it gives a reason to 'identify' - that is quite normal, you know.

That's the point of the post, then, isn't it? As I said, interesting psychology.

There is an error in the title. The chap concerned was actually a GCHQ employee, and on secondment to MI6 (Special Intelligence Service). What is desparately sad is that he has had his life cut short, and according to the news, police are looking into his "personal life". The fact he was a reasonably competent bike rider is an aside, it just seems that was the picture which the news people located.

The report on the BBC news website now says that his body was discovered padlocked inside a sports bag.

BBC Home Affairs correspondent Danny Shaw said details of the padlock "clearly indicates someone else was involved" in the incident.

Well spotted Danny, yeah you're right he'd have had trouble either committing suicide or dying of natural causes and padlocking himself into a bag...
