Hello everyone. There's a stretch of off road cycle path which is supposed to be shared - use in south Bristol at the Imperial Park shopping complex (Hartcliffe). I would like to nominate this stretch as the most pointless off-road shared use path because of this:

Yep, it's a car park. I contacted Bristol Council who told me it's actually still private land, so they can't do anything. So what's the point in it at all?. It would have been easier to just paint some extra parking bays along this bit of road. I'm just waiting for the fast food burger van to turn up  , maybe a jet wash service for the cars?.

When I was on holiday we drove from Bigbury Bay to the Eden Project and ended up going through Plymouth. Not sure of the name of the road (Exeter Street???) but the cycle lanes down either side we just full of parked cars. Seemed to be the norm for the road

If it's private land then why does it have proper signage installed?

Something isn't right there. I've read of cases where people have owned private land connected to the pavement/footpath, and been ticketed for parking their vehicles there - even on private land. Because that land is judged to be part of the pavement, no matter who owns it.

Well, here's the response from the council (17/06/11):

I am writing in response to your enquiry requesting enforcement and signing to prevent parking obstructing the cycle facility near the Urban splash development at Imperial Park in South Bristol. According to our records this land is not in Council ownership as yet. It may be that it is proposed for handover to the Council through the adoption process but we understand that there is further development proposed for this area so they may well be looking to hand it over as a package at a later date.

The Council do not therefore have any jurisdiction over this land at present.

I will write to the agents who own the land and ask that can prevent obstructive parking and to the Police who have the powers to enforce obstructions in the highway.

Thank you for bringing the matter to our attention.

Looks as if it will continue to get used as a car park until this situation is resolved ie. years from now. What annoys me is that only about 200 yards around the corner is the main car park for the whole shopping complex which is about the size of several footbal pitches and these people choose to ignore the signs and plonk their cars etc, on the path presumably because they don't want to have to move their vehicle when the maximum (about 2 hours) time limit is up in the main car parking zone  .
