The martial arts

I've been doing Shotokan karate for almost four years now, I'm 1st kyu, hoping to grade for my 1st dan (black belt) this year. As a club, we are also now starting tuition in BJJ, mostly for groundwork.

Are there any other martial artists on here?

Fixed wheel fanatic.
I studied with Sensei Kato (JKA) for many years. I really enjoyed it but a whiplash injury and work commitments ended my karate about 10 years ago. I used to enjoy it and I was pretty good at it. I used to miss it, but I enjoy my cycling more.

Sounds similar to me !
I did Lau Gar Kung fu to black "sash" along with Tai chi then found Wing Tsun suited me a lot more so studied that for 3 years or so before a shoulder injury meant i could not train, even after a long rest it still hurt for nearly 2 weeks after 1 session. Even now after 7 years i can still feel some scar tissue in the muscle so i decided to take up cycling again .Add on top of that shift work and a young family which means my commute is often the only chance i get .

I attained a 2nd Dan in ITF Tae Kwon Do before I discovered booze and women. I always promised myself i'd get back to it one day but the older I get the less likely that is becoming.

Good luck with your Dan grading OP.

Up until 15 months ago, i had 11 years of Steelwire Mantis/Chow Gar Mantis under my belt, but lesson times, don't suit and doing TRX and Cycling is much more convenient  i still practise on my own certain forms and drills but thats about it, MA will always have a soft spot, once the daughter is old enough though she will be learning something!

best of luck with the grading

Thanks  it is good to keep up practice at home, that way you won't be so rusty when you go back ;)

Martial arts are great for kids, for fitness and self-confidence.

Totally the basis of Chow gar is the first form, as it teaches you so much generally without you realising until a few years down the road, this is the form above all others i practise, I think my daughter will love doing MA as long as daddy joins in, gives me an excuse to take something up again with the missus beating me up

Definitely, when parents join, kids are even more motivated and much more likely to stick with it through those periods when they just don't feel like it.

Eldest lad started judo a month or so ago in addition to boxing, I used to do it when I was 13/14 and went for a session last night....wore shorts, big mistake! My knees are raw, shoulder cracked/ popped, I felt fine.......20 hours later I'm stiffening up.....I'm not unfit but im not 14 anymore.
