There was for a brief period from 1984-89, a Red Jersey for the intermediate sprints that was separate from the Green, but other than that... this has been the situation for a long time.
And BTW, Cav wouldn't have had many problems winning the Green this year had he had his head on properly on the first few stages. But he does need to learn to be able to hoover up a few more intermediates on stages where there isn't going to be a final sprint, or at least to follow someone like Thor who will, and not lose too much.
