I was thinking about nipping off to get me some cycle mits tomorrow morning before work.

Thing is, do they make much difference?

This idea comes after 2 things -
1. Riding off to go fishing about 6am the other week, getting a bit of speed downhill my hands practically froze solid.

2. Last week, 15ish mile ride, warm day, after about 7miles my palms became so sweaty I had no grip on the bars.

Are they gonna make much odds to this kind of thing or, are they really more of a fashion statment??

The main reason I wear gloves is to afford my palms a little protection if I take a tumble. I've btdt without gloves and remember picking the bits of gravel out of my hands.

Obviously in winter I wear either gloves or mittens to keep my hands warm.

Not so much designed to keep your little pinkies warm, but helps with the grip, provides a bit more comfort for your little handies due to the padding, but most important, provides your palms a bit of protection when you come off and you can also whilst riding put the palm on your tyres if you think you have got something stuck in it to remove it without stopping

I use them most of the time from about April to about October.

They don't do much to keep hands warm - a bit but not much. They can get a bit hot in hot weather too.

If you get padded ones they give a bit of protection against road or path vibration. They help to give grip on the bars when your palms get sweaty. After a short while they stink and they only wash successfully a couple of times.

My current policy is to buy 5 pairs of Lidl ones for just over a tenner when they have them and use them for everyday riding, throwing them away when they wear out or get smelly, and have a pair of reasonably good ones for longer rides.

In winter it's thermal gloves, but in between full fingered cycling gloves do more what you ask in the OP, providing a certain amount of protection from the cold in addition to what the mitts offer.

I only ever used to bother with long gloves in cold weather, but now riding more commuting, use cheap Aldi gloves for summer commutes - same reason as above - if I tumble. I also have some very good Spesh BG Pro gloves for long rides.

I have before now, sat there picking gravel out of my palms. Wasn't quite as painful as the 6" square patch of my ass I removed on the Cat and Fiddle. Looked a right Pro. riding the 15 miles home with half my butt hanging out my shorts covered in blood. I was more hisssed off about scuffing a new pair of Sidi's, wrecking fairly new 'club shorts' and gouging out my Look Team pedals.
