Today's bikes are quite different from once upon a time, the materials and the technological advances but one thing has stayed the same and is as big a pain now as ever - that friggin' cable clamp. Surely somebody could come up with an improvement on that, or is it absolutely the only way?

Cack handed are we?
Not exactly, for sure I wouldn't pretend to be a mechanical genius on an internet forum but I find this job, perhaps unnecessarily, difficult and thought there might be a simple but effective alternative that no one has bothered to invent yet.

It's funny I thought that this was a fiddle that must have bothered others, seems I am wrong. I can do it, have done it many times and the more you do it the easier it gets I am not particularly cack handed nor do I want to trek out to a bike shop every time I need a minor adjustment just thought there might be an easier way that's all.
In retrospect it is a much easier task than asking what I thought was a simple question and then dealing with the non answers.
It is the way it is because that's the way it is, eh?

Eh!

I've seen housed cables, of the correct length, fittings on either end. Just slot them into place.
Longer barrel adjusters & only on certain models. Not cheap either. Cables were about three times the price of an ordinary cable, that worked with a clamp. Assuming you could find somewhere that sold them, that is.

Have you got a third or as some call it a forth hand tool? For not a lot of money they are a useful tool.
