RIP Buddy...

Was listening to 'Chantilly Lace' by the Big Bopper the other day and it reminded me of buddy holly as on the night the Big Bopper and Buddy bet each other for the seat in the airplane and Buddy won. Some luck, huh?

True rock and roll pioneer, fantastic sound - Great stuff!

Didn't Waylon Jennings give up his seat for the Big Bopper? - could've been him doing the 'Dukes of Hazzard' theme!

Funny how his home town of Lubbock in Texas is home to so many other great musicians, Delbert McClinton, Joe Ely, Terry Allen et al - must be something in the water!

Holly was a true pioneer his early rockabilly stuff was simply awesome, rarely heard the nashville sessions from 1956 (the ones decca turned down) took popular music to, new levels of intensity, multi layered cross rythym & syncopation (cuban influence) and that infamous hiccuping delivery....B)
So many of this songs stand out it would be unfair to single any out but 'well all right' from 1957 with acoustic guitar & voice only, sounds more like a 60's song than many 60's songs

Love Buddy Holly stuff, had a skiffle band at our wedding and made sure they did plenty of his stuff.

Silly sod, if only he had sat at the back of the plane... after all, whoever heard of a plane reversing into a mountain!

But didnt he steal almost his entire style off Bo Diddley? I don´t know, but that´s what BD´s orbituaries were saying when he died rather more recently...

More Hank Williams- the yodelling hiccuping lyrics......no artist emerges from a vacuum..anyway whatever his formative influences soon got left behind and hollys influence on the 60's is undeniable.

Here is an early gem from those nashville sessions I mentioned, released posthumously, slight additional overdubbing but the raw intensity remains intact.... thats real authentic rockabilly ;)

I can remember exactly where and when I heard 'Chantilly Lace' for the first time. Much more significant and influential on my life than hearing about the death of JFK or John Lennon.

BBC 4 is showing an 'Arena' from 1985 about Buddy Holly - worth a look.
Contribution from Paul McCartney, unfortunately also the old leather saddlebag faced fraud Keef Richards but don't let that put you off.

No. He was obviously influenced by Bo Diddley, as were many others, but he certainly didn't "steal almost his entire style" from him.

I´ll buy that. I really can´t see Buddy Holly as a genius though.
