I've got the hummvee longs and whilst ok, I don't find them as good a fit as the 3/4 length ones (most used and favourite cycling clothing) I have. Dunno if they are a different cut or it's because they lack the liner the 3/4's have so seem to slip whilst wearing them.
Perhaps best to try first? Of course if you do like them then you'll have to buy them, thus defeating the point of the op.

So, let's get some suggestions for things that are cheap, but invaluable, and will feed the urge without having to spend bigger money on other things (like the Hummvee longs that I'm trying so hard not to Froogle as I type)....

These smaller purchases you want to pursue are probably only tactical in the longer run.

My strategy right now is to buy whatever I think I need right now - no matter how expensive. Jackets, shorts, shoes.. bikes whatever.

If you buy all this stuff now, you won't have to in the future.
