Have you ever wanted to take on a cycling challenge of a lifetime? We want you to join us for the Big Heart Bike Ride in Africa to raise funds for the heart charity of your choice.
The Big Heart Bike Ride in Africa entails five days of consecutive cycling for a distance of 360km across Tanzania, starting in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro and finishing at the impressive Ngorongoro Crater, where there will be the option to do a safari. Along the way we will cycle past three national parks and experience the life and culture of the colourful Maasai tribe in their natural environment.
It will be a journey full of fun, friendship and incredible support as people of all ages and from all walks of life challenge themselves for an amazing cause. This fantastic challenge is a great opportunity to get fit, lose weight and have an experience of a life time all whilst raising significant funds to help fight heart disease.
The Itinerary
Day 1 London to Tanzania Depart UK for our overnight flight to Kilimanjaro Airport, Tanzania.
Day 2 Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge, Moshi. We arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport where we will be met by our Tanzanian ground handlers for the transfer of approximately one hour to our hotel, Kilemakyaro Mountain Lodge, Moshi which lies in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest free-standing mountain in the world at 5,895 meters. During the afternoon we will have a bike fitting session at the hotel. After dinner our Challenge event Leader will brief everybody on the challenge ahead.
Day 3 Moshi to Olpopongi Maasai Village (77kms) We leave our hotel and cycle downhill for the first few kilometers on tarmac roads into Moshi. We then turn towards the bustling Maasai town of Sanyu Juu and continue cycling through lush landscapes with only a few moderate hills. We will be greeted by local children as we cycle from village to village. We reach our overnight camp at the Olpopongi Maasai Village where we will have the opportunity to explore the village and be given an insight into the authentic Maasai way of life through the museum they keep. We will be treated to a barbecue dinner around the camp fire and entertained by the Maasai dancing and singing.
Day 4 Olpopongi Maasai Village to Arusha (76kms). We start today by cycling through an area sandwiched between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru (4565m), still considered by experts to be an active volcano. The volcanic landscape offers a striking difference to the lush surroundings of Kilimanjaro. There is the potential to see lots of wildlife along the route today including Giraffe, Impala, Baboon, monkey and a variety of birdlife. A long descent awaits us as we finish the day by cycling into the bustling town of Arusha, the main town in northern Tanzania where our overnight hotel awaits us.
Day 5 Arusha to Zion Campsite near Tarangire National Park (94kms) After a few kilometres we leave the hustle and bustle of Arusha behind as we cycle through beautiful rolling and seemingly endless grasslands. Our lunch stop today will give us the opportunity to visit the nearby Mtimmoja Primary School where approximately 380 Maasai children are educated. After a long but beautiful day of cycling we descend into the warm basin of the east African Rift Valley where we camp close to the Tarangire National Park.
Day 6 Tarangire National Park to Lake Manyara National Park (66kms). The first half of today’s ride is a speedy and flat 35kms on a wide and comfortable asphalt road. Once we leave the main road and enter deeper into the Rift Valley it becomes an area of stark contrasts, great natural beauty and fantastic off-road cycling. We may see troops of monkey and baboon crossing our bumpy dirt trail which cuts through various cultivated areas. As we approach Lake Manyara a hillier section merges with a swampy area. We are eventually met by our buses that will take us to our overnight accommodation near to the Lake Manyara National Park
Day 7 Mto Wa Mbu to Ngorongoro Crater Conservsation Area (39kms). Although today’s ride is short in mileage it does include some challenging inclines and we should remember that we finish today at 2,000m above sea level. Time though is on our side so there will be the opportunity for plenty of stops along the smooth asphalt road that lead to the park entrance. We cycle today to our finish line at the gates of the Ngorongoro Crater National Park, often referred to as ‘The Garden of Eden’. Ngorongoro is famous for its profusion of wildlife found within the extinct crater which was formed when a large volcano exploded three million years ago. It is 610 meters deep and has a floor area of 260 square kilometres. Upon reaching the gates of the Ngorongoro Crater there will be the opportunity for celebrations as we cross the official finish line. Our buses will take us back to our lodging at Mto Wa Mbu.
Day 8 Free Day – Ngorongoro Crater Optional Jeep Safari. We have a free day today during which we are able to offer participants an optional jeep safari into the Ngorongoro Crater which affords the best opportunity for seeing lots of game. We spend several hours game spotting at various locations around the crater before having a picnic lunch at hippo pool after which we head back to our lodge to prepare ourselves for the return journey to the UK.
