I'm just watching the highlights on telly now.. I hope that spectator feels suitably stupid and embarrassed.

I haven't followed cycle sport hardly at all until now so it's all a learning curve for me. I'm looking forward to seeing the mountain stages for the scenery if nothing else. I mustn't forget to get out riding myself too - I have a long (for me) ride coming up in August I need to do a little training for.

I've been watching pro cycling, mostly the TdF, since a kid. So since around the early 80s. I'm still learning new stuff even now. One of the most changing sports there is, certainly as far as sponsorship goes (LiquiGas is probably the longest running current team - something like 9 years iirc, most teams last 2 years iirc)

I have some sympathy for the spectator.

I watched a TT a few years ago. When Lance came past (he was in yellow and so was last on the road) the small crowd surged forward, and I came within inches of elbowing him off his bike. Some might say that was a missed opportunity

If there are big crowds I can understand more. Here there didnt appear to be.

One thing that annoys me about ITV4's coverage:

"Why do they have 2nd and 3rd place on the Podium?"

For you, Chris. For you. ;)

Yes, there was clear space behind her (which she got knocked back into because she was standing on the tarmac looking the wrong way).

Barnet,
That's what I find amusing, they were looking the wrong way!! Stand there all day to watch the peloton go past and then look the wrong way when it does!! Doh!

The thing I find amusing is the people that wait by the road for hours waiting for the tour to pass, and then as the peloton passes they are waving at the helicopter to have their 5 seconds of fame on the telly.

LOL

and just wasn't good enough

He was a great rider to be fair. Not like I can compare, LOL!

I do like the farmers in the fields with their displays, though. Quads on stage 1 were very cool!

The teams themselves tend to be run by the same people but the name sponsors change a lot. HTC-Highroad for example have a different name every year, but for some reason I still see them as Team Telekom. Astana is the remnants of Liberty Seguros, and Movistar (or Caisse D'Epargne as it was last year) are the Banesto team of Indurain.

But for actual sponsors, Liquigas, Lampre, Lotto and Euskaltel have all been around for a long time. Quickstep and Cofidis have been involved for a long time too.

Although many teams have a long history of continuous management albeit with name changes due to sponsors changing. eg banesto to moviestar. I believe banesto goes even further back to Reynolds aluminium, but for continuous sponsorship, I believe Rabobank have been running a pro team since the late 90's

if anyone could produce a guide to the evolution of these teams I (as a newbie spectator) would be eternally grateful...... it's one thing that the commentators never seem to mention
