That cheered me up

Just something that made my day a little brighter:

There was an airshow on today at a town near where I live. The traffic on pretty much every road was at a stand still, therefore I had the oppurtunity to do a lot of filtering. There were two particular sections of my ride when I was filtering that cheered me up.

1) When lane splitting down a narrow but busy main road, traffic in both directions was stopped. As drivers were near the kerb, I decided that it would be best to go down the center of the road. While I was riding (not very fast BTW) I often encountered situations where I could not get through because the traffic was so close together. And people actually moved over to the left for me to get through when they saw me coming. I of course was thanking everyone who moved over and that cheered me up.

2) I had earlier overtaken a motorbike who was held up in the traffic in 1). I had travelled about 1 mile when I stopped at a set of traffic lights. I then noticed the car infront of me behind some more traffic (which confused me a bit). After the lights, the road widens and there are cross hatchings down the center of the road (with the occasional traffic island as well) for about half a mile. I could see that the motobike was going to filter past as many people as he could, so I decided to do the same.
But I felt like it would be fun to try to keep up with the motor bike. So when he set off, I did as well, hitting 30mph. He started to pull away from me but I continued to stay in the center of the road passing everyone. At the next set of traffic lights, I saw him waiting to turn left (when I was going straight on). I pulled up allong side him and informed him that I was behind him the whole way (not actually correct but there wasnt time to be detailed). He replied "It was hard wasnt it?" and I said "Yes, it certainly was". Then the lights changed.

In all, the combination of people being kind and letting me through, and a nice biker, really cheered me up for the rest of the day.

Excellent! It's really good to hear happy posts, all too often the stories are about how horrible other road users can be. I love anything with 2 wheels myself, with or without engine. On the whole I find motorcyclists a pretty friendly bunch (though there are always exceptions to any rule). Glad you had a nice day, thanks for sharing. I had a good rideout today with some CycleChatters round Windsor, Ascot and the Great Park. Very few cars and a nice social ride.

Bit nicer than my day - I got rained on, got stuck behind a man smoking the foulest joint ever, then got rained on again on the way home. I was only out for 45 minutes!

As you said, the majority of motorcyclists are very nice. I did have the unfortunate occurence where I was behind a car today waiting to turn right. These two motorbikes (who I had previously passed) overtook on the right and blocked the car from trying to turn. I thought it was quite rude intil I saw a car do exactly the same but to a whole line of traffic.

I am however going to try my hand at trackstanding this evening (if the weather picks up of course). I will have my camera running so it should be good. (or not)

with regards to the weather, same. It started chucking it down when I was chasing the motorbike. Picked up a bit now but there is a huge rain cloud over me.

Stoopid mobile phone keyboard...
Sabian, you were doubly unlucky. Proper rain would at least have extinguished the guy's joint!

Last year I took the bike to South Africa to ride the Cape Argus and the weekend before I went out for a blast on the roads around Sandton with some cycling friends of my agent. There were several large groups of motorcyclists on huge Harleys cruising around the same roads and at one point where there had been an accident I had the bizarre experience of getting into a pack and being hauled along at around 30 in a patch of hot still air for a mile, surrounded by fat blokes (and a few girls) in black leather; I felt almost naked in comparison in my lycra! They found the situation as funny as I did, judging from the smiles and thumbs ups I got.

This year I did the same again, going out with a huge crew from a local bike shop. I was riding along in a big line of cyclists when we passed a small private lion sanctuary; you could smell the rotten meat they were being fed. Suddenly a lion roared from the bush right beside the road - the effect on the line of cyclists was dramatic, everybody looked over their shoulders and the line wobbled as if it was being blown by a sudden gust of wind!

We were in Rhyl on Saturday - with the outlaws, and as it was raining, we were mainly in the indoor shopping centre with the outlaws in wheelchairs.

Traffic was bad getting out then. Saw a couple of WWII fighters in the distance, and heard a jet, but the weather was pants.

You would expect the traffic to be worse going in than out wouldnt you?
