Went to the tip today and whilst getting rid of some knackered curtain poles I spotted a dumped BMX. Asked the chap if it was OK to take it home and do up for my boy, and he kindly consented. I started rummaging round the other bikes looking for a seatpost and saddle and found a complete BMX in better nick. My youngest has just come in from playing on his new Barracuda and loves it. May even get to the BMX park later today!

Goodness only knows why it was dumped, but at least it will be cherished again now!

Good find indeed! Not rare though, a friend was talling me this weekend that he got to know the guys at the local tip, took them the odd bag of pork pies, and asked them to put aside any old bikes as he had a couple of kids needing them. He was tripping over the things within weeks and lost count of the number of bikes he got with such show-stopping faults as burst tyres or gears cable stopped moving. HIs kids and all their mates had a stream of bikes for years, as they grew out of them or wore them out he'd repeat the exercise as necessary.

I've had similar success via Freecycle - one "build one good from 2 wrecks" exercise, one that needed tyres and cables from the junk box and is now being ridden to the shops by a mate, and finally a Dawes Galaxy, can you believe.
