on today's ride, the lower part of my chain managed to jump between chainstay and rings, but I prevented a 3 mile walk back home by undoing the KMC quick link - took about 15 mins to do by bending and pushing on the split link, so disaster averted.

didn't think it would be possible but someone somwhere did post about this andthey were right if you perservere.

Need to adjust your stop screws now or it will come off again.

I made a release tool by grinding the end of a pair of long nose pliers until thin enough to fit in the links then bending the tips in so they dont slip off. My fingers arent strong enough on their own.

yep - it was cahin suck - gawd knows how it managed to get trhough the gap ... and luckily without damaget o the frame.

I too have home made split link removal tool but do not carry it around with me.

can't see how clamping that device to the seat tube is going to help - the chain is not dropping off the rings but remains on the ring until it gets past the chainstay.- for example:
