Testing myself on a 10TT route.

Back in the day when i were a lad (1988) i had half a dozen attempts at the local 10 mile TT event.
Times ranging from 28.30 - 35.00.

Fast forward to today and i thought i'd have another go, but in a "worst case scenario" took my
mountain bike (on slicks).
After cycling 15 miles to the course on quite a windy day i thought i'd used up the "best bit" of my legs.
Not so ... 10.09 miles in 34.00 minutes.

I'm really surprised, maybe all those base miles done in the evenings after a day on my feet at work
have had an effect on my 42 year old legs. I'll be looking to join one of the local clubs soon! ^_^

Well done sir! My current target is sub 40 mins. I'm out tonight so I'll let you know how I get on.

Well done sir!

As soon as my new wheels come the local 10 mile TT course is getting hit hard!!!! lol. will then try and do it once a week before work to see how i progress too.

I think the only advice i can give from my first attempt in 24 years:
  • A pre-race warmup ride may help.
  • Don't go hell for leather straight away. Give it a mile at 80% before speeding up.
I never had that "pure carbon dioxide" breath yesterday that i used to get 24 years ago, either
that or the fumes from leaded petrol in those days caused it.

Good effort!

10 miles of straight effort against the clock is a strange discipline and a demanding one to pick up.

My middle child (16) has just started doing these with a view to seeing if he likes it and having a real go next year. So far he likes it a lot.

It matters not in these things where you start. It's about competing with your own times.

Do join a club and do keep at it. 42 is not old. 34 minutes is pretty good on an MTB.

Hmm a bit gutted at this effort. I felt stronger than this before the ride

My speed seems very random in relation to the climbs

The only plus is not coming last in any of the segments

Pics didn't upload..... 10 miles in 43 mins

Keep at it!
Why not try it on a sunday morning after having an easy saturday, and then one evening after being on your feet all day?
Find out what works best for you in the early days of TTing. Not that you get a choice when you try official TT rides.

My TT involved a 15 mile ride first on my MTB to the course.
The next time i try a TT i'll be driving to the "end" of the Tottenhill course, dragging a road bike out the zafira
and cruising a couple of miles to the start before going into it hard.
