Temporary freeze Garmin 800

Yesterday, half through a ride my unit froze showing the menu page with 90% battery charged. None of the buttons produced any response. Luckily I had enough local knowledge to find a way to home some 48 kms away.

This morning the battery was full discharged and the unit appears to be having normally. Test ride tomorrow.

Qn 1: why did this happen? Is it common? How can it be prevented?
Qn 2: why would you ever leave home without a map?

I think so. I always start with G Express which advises of any available updates.

i've only got the 705 but if you put a memory card in with too much data on it can send mine a bit do-lally - but i dont know if yours takes a memorycard - so really i am no help at all

My 1st 800 used to do this.
I could unfeeze it by holding down the power button for upwards of 10 seconds then turning it back on.
It was changed under warranty.
The replacement unit generally works OK but it has some other issues.
