Tell me I’m not going mad

Was changing the front derailleur cable a job I have done before successfully. On inserting a new cable before anything else had been tightened up I couldn’t get the gear lever to click up into the position that would be to change up into the big front ring. Took the cable out and works perfectly. From the photo I can’t help think the cable end should sit further in more snuggly, but it’s definitely a gear cable and not a brake cable with the larger end. Yet on comparing it with my other bikes cable end it’s recessed further into the housing. Is this cable sat correctly ?
Am I being completely stupid here ??

No.
You are right it should be further in than that. It should slot into the mechanism behind the black plate. Sometimes need a thin screwdriver to jiggle it into place.

That looks like it's not pushed in far enough and it's catching on the lever body.

What I thought; never have had an issue before. Usually goes in fairly easily. Will try some gentle persuasion.

Check the other side and you won't see the end !

Before you go persuading it compare it to the size of the old one. Put some grease on it.

Just tried that worked thanks. Now let’s see if I can get the derailleur set up...🤔
