TdF - Petacchi hanging out the back !!??

What's with Petacchi ? He finished last in the first stage and is now last but one on GC, over 33 minutes down. Is he ill ? I can't believe he's saving himself for a strong finish in France..... at this rate he'll be eliminated on time before he even gets there.... any thoughts ?
