It's the TarKa trail isn't it? I have been looking at that myself the past couple of days but I haven't ridden it yet so I can't answer your question.

I am going down to Devon in September and am planning some rides. I thought that I might catch the train to Barnstaple and ride back towards Newton Abott using some sections of the trail. I'm not sure what the surface is like (between Barnstaple and Okehampton). I would be on my road bike so I wouldn't fancy too much mud and gravel.

Ah, I just took a look at the Sustrans page for your section: "The Trail is easy cycling, traffic free and surfaced throughout, along estuary sides and through wooded valleys." It sounds really nice and not a problem in either direction. See which way the wind is blowing and take advantage of it if possible?

I know it's the Tarka but my silly pad thing did it and I can't see how to amend it.

I have ridden most of it but fancied doing it in one hit

My new phone is very insistent on auto-correcting things until I force them into its dictionary. I often type 'Tod' as an abbreviation for 'Todmorden' but it kept changing it to 'Today'!

That section of the trail sounds like a perfect ride for the Half Metric Century a Month Challenge.

A non-cyclist friend is doing the 'Bay Way' with me this summer and if she gets on ok with that we said that we might have a go at the entire Tarka Trail later this year or maybe next year.

Never done it end to end, let me know how you get on. It's one of my favourite rides, we tend to hire bikes from a place in Braunton, and we never seem to get very far past Fremington for some reason :okay:

Hubs has a clinic appointment more than half way there. Weather looks ok and the kids are back in their schools so thought it would be a good opportunity.
It would be my 3rd 50km of the month

It changes to not-very-nice gravel somewhere near Torrington (or, at least it did when I tried to ride it on my road bike). Maybe it's been improved since I was last there though...

It's really well worth riding as far as Torrington for sure, but the A3124 is a dream of a road, if you want to head back towards Exeter from there.

Hubs was going to drop me at one end, meet me in the middle for a cuppa, then pick me up at the other end. Taking Eric, the CX bike.

I will keep a look out around the Torrington area for the gravel.

I think actually it's at the junction in the middle of this bit of map, south east of Torrington.

Actually, Google Street View covers the Tarka Trail now, and though the type of surface isn't very clear, it sould give you an idea.

It's where it crosses the B3227 near Torrington that it becomes dirt/gravel. I don't travel on that bit regularly but when I have it's been about as good as a dirt path can be. When I've been on it slick tyres were fine and the weather has been pretty dry lately.

Edit: I've never been past Yarde though so no idea what that's like.

6 of one 1/2 dozen of the other I reckon, but south-north would be nice, finish with the very scenic coastal bit. We rode it last year, camped at Bideford and did a loop north one day and south the next.
Slightly downhill going north I think:thumbsup:

I do it a fair bit....... Generally when it's quieter..... so not this weekend ! As above from various peeps, it's nice tarmac all the way from Braunton down to Torrington Puffing Billy car park......That's 20 miles, so a 40 mile round trip. Thereafter, it's a mix of compacted mud/ stone/ chippings. For the most part, it's chippings from Torrington down to about East Yarde. After that, it's compacted mud, so as long as it's dry, it's a nice run all the way down to Meeth from there.......... That's a further 10 miles.

I use the cyclocross bike nowadays for anything past Torrington, but have seen all sorts of bikes do it. There are some bits around Yarde that are pretty lumpy with jagged stones poking up and lots of sharp bits.... so beware..... punctures there are pretty common ! There's nothing at Meeth...... nothing ! Just an old disused railway waiting room. But the bits past Torrington are generally much quieter, whereas the bits from Barnstaple down to Torrington can be pretty busy with bikes/ doggy walkers........... I prefer the last 10 miles for the peace and quiet, there's lots of it through forests, it's a great ride anyhow !

Always worth stopping at East Yarde cafe if it's open yet, fabulous place........!!!!! And of course Fremington Quay cafe...... if you can get a table !

That section was just about ok when I rode it in on my road bike back in February, but it was snowing at the time! It should be fine in dry weather.
