For age and ages I put off going clipless, now with my first ever road bike and the crap pedals that they supply. I decided to go clipless, what a difference it makes to the feel of the ride and the extra power you get as no lost energy from feet coming off pedals. Cliping in on my push off foot will take some getting use to but I am glad I gone clipless.

Well done, I have yet to go clipless. I have got the pedals and shoes, but I too keep putting it off!
Sorry about your dog, good age though.

Thanks, he was my best friend. Had a very good life and was never ill, until the end.

But back on topic, get them clipless peds installed, it makes a big difference.

For some reason I went back to flats last autumn.

By coincidence, I put the spd-sl's back on yesterday. Paid silly money for them and the shoes so ...

Anyway, I had a little quad pain for the first 10 miles. But that soon went and I was fine for the rest of the ride. It did make the couple of single-chevron hills a little 'easier'.
I just have to get used to remembering to shift down a gear or two when stopping on a steep hill.

However, when I got home, I forgot that I was clipped in when doing a short 'warm down' on the rollers.
The cat walked by, and I lost concentration . Luckily there was a wall in the way and I had the brakes covered.

It took me a long time and several"moments" to get used to clipless pedals but now I dont feel fully in control of the bike without them, I,m not fast so dont think the extra power is noticeable, just feels right as if being part of the bike.

I've started using them on my MTB.

When the trail gets really rough I can actually feel the pedals trying to come away from my feet which is a great reson to have the SPD's in my view.

I have toppled sideways twice though.
