Has anyone used these DVDs? How do they work, do they only work with Tacx trainers or do you basically just stick the DVD in, watch it and copy the effort?
They only work with Tacx I-magic / Fortius trainers.
You stick them in the COMPUTER, load up the software for the turbo trainer and then pedal away. The quicker you pedal the quicker the dvd plays back and when you go uphill/quicker in the dvd the resistance changes.

Tacx also make a few DVD's for non VR trainers which play in a standard dvd player. I assume it's these that the OP is referring to?
I've never used them but my understanding is that the user adjusts the resistance manually when the DVD indicates to do so. These are aimed at other Tacx trainers like Flow/Sirius which have a 0 to 10 resistance changer which you mount on the handlebars. The video will indicate when to change resistance level.
For non Tacx trainers, i suppose you can alter the gearing as a substitute.
