If I simply swap my triple crankset with a compact, keep everything else the same and adjust the h or v screw to stop the chain going to far will it work? Cheers

You may possibly improve shifting slightly if you take a link out, but not doing so will cause no problem.
The least you can take out is 2 links (1 inner/outer pair), and that's equivalent to 4T off the chainring, so it is possible that removing links could leave your chain too short, if it was bang on the limit before.

He's going the other way, triple to compact, so more likely the chain would need to be longer?

What kind of chainset is it? E.g. Hollowtech II or some other external bearing variety or square taper style??

Also - the triple might be a 30-39-50... how many teeth on the big dog?

I'll take for granted that you're ok with swapping the chainsets. After that it depends on the size of the largest chainring your taking off and the one you're putting on and the following issues as they arise....
1) It's quite possible you'll have to move the front mech up/down a little bit.
2) By moving the front mech you might need to fit a new front mech cable to accommodate the difference in length.
3) The front mech might not have enough travel to cover three chain rings, might need replacing.
4) The front mech lever might not have the travel to to move the front mech to cover three chainrings.
5) Depending on the size of sprockets on the rear you may need a longer rear mech cage to accommodate small chainring to large rear sprocket.
6) All of the above will have an impact on the length of chain required.
Er no. Largest chain ring on a triple is typically 52-53T, on a compact this is 50T so a couple of links would have to be removed - maybe. Not made longer though.
Largest ring on my triple is a 50.

I currently have a 50/39/30, and looking to change to a compact 50/34. Any issues or a straight swap?
Thanks

Should be straightforward, but I wouldn't bother. It's a lot of faff to save a few ounces, and (personally speaking) I hate the shift pattern on compacts. I'm forever going from one chainring to the other and back again, just to keep around 50-70 inch gears.
Oh, I'd hate to change, I only bought the new bike this Summer, and a triple it was by personal choice, not very fashionable though is it^_^ Was rather hoping to just simplify the question

My triple is a shimano 2303 52/42/30 square taper and was thinking of swapping it for the compact equivalent shimano 2300 50/34. Thought it might just be a straight swap.

Honestly...because I feel like people think I've got it easy when they see I have triple. Probably wrong to think like that but everyone seems to have a compact
