Got a sweat rash for the first time last Sunday. Wearing padded shorts, and wondering why I hadn't got one before as on this occasion I was only out for about 10 miles and not that sweaty, Ive been worse on much longer rides and never had this trouble. What do others do to prevent it as i could imagine it being a real problem if on a multi day tour.

Was it just a sweat rash?

If shorts come up too large, then the extra material will cause rubbing and discomfort. Also, after a long ride, make sure you wash your shorts to rid them of the bacteria that thrive in warm, damp environments.

Otherwise, a sprinkling of talc around the inside top of your thighs will help.

If it's a strawberry coloured rash at the very top of the inside of your thighs, adjacent to some errr, dangly bits, it might be tinea cruris, a fungal skin infection, aka Jock Itch, Scrot Rot etc. Google tinea cruris.

It is easy to get rid of. Go to the chemist and ask for some Canesten cream. If you want a cheaper cure, do likewise but ask for unbranded 1% clotrimazole cream. Same stuff, but without the expensive advertising budget.

Good luck.

Thanks for replies. Its clearing up really quickly. I think both replies are correct actually. I dont think I pulled the padded shorts up far enough and when I think about it I may have worn them them a week before and not put them in the wash, as I normally do. Just shows you can't be too careful.

Can also be used preventatively. Used post-ride & shower it'll prevent further occurences.

Yep, that wouldn't have helped matters!

I can recommend Sudocrem for pre ride application, and conotrane for pre and post ride application. Also a product called Chafe-Ease from Nature's Kiss (I noted Evans sold it last time I was back in the UK) for after ride soothing - that's really good. Sudocrem is quite thick and I'll use that for longer riders (100km plus) but conotrane is thinner and easier to rub in. You can get both from Boots. If a rash does get a bit nasty, I'll use daktarin.
