Swapping forks, ahead type. Advice sought.

Is it possible to put forks with a 1" steer tube onto a bike currently fitted with 1+1/8" forks? I can see that I would need a shim for the stem to fit back on but does it need a shim that goes the entire length of the steerer tube or not. Or should I forget it?

You can get reducer headsets which either have adapters or specially sized bearings to fit a narrower steered.
