a couple of days ago i aquired a carrera vulcan hard tail xc spec , disc brakes.

after initial cleaning etc i notice that the forks ( xcm suntour )allthough they do move up and down , sound really dry and feel notchy as if they are scraping inside ,also the lockout doesnt seem to be working,

can anyone tell me if these can be re-greased or how to fettle them , can the lock out be repaired ,or is it time for new forks .if so ,any recomendations, now obviously being a tight fisted git i dont want to spend a fortune ,and the bike cost next to nowt anyway but everything else about it is fine.

thanks in advance for any advice.

You can easily drop the lower leg off, clean & refit. To get at the spring you'll need the special tool (from Greyville enterprises) for removing the cap from fork leg. You can then take spring out, clean, grease & refit. Live without lockout as it will be expensive to replace - prob not worth it for value of fork.

They are strippable, and yes, they do sound like they've been run dry. Given that they have probably been abused whilst unserviced/unloved, I would go with flying start and recommend some ebay bargain Tora. I doub't you'll get Reba for under £100 unless they too have been unserviced and unloved.

I'll PM an eBay link..... I'll explain why on the PM.
