Well I have the standard SKS plastic mudguards but on my new Tifosi (Aluminium) Audax frame the rear mudguard (not old) has been shaken to death. The mudguard has literally been shaken and split all the way across with signs of other cracks appearing. So I think I need to mount the new one to the bike using rubber type attachments to dampen out future shakes. Anyone know of any such things? I'm thinking semi flexible at the drop outs, the brake bridge and the bottom bracket bridge. Carbon forks seem to protect the front mudguard.

Ta for any thoughts/knowledge/suggestions

I cut out bits of old innertube as rubber washers between the fixing bolts for this kind of purpose. Works brilliantly.

The rear similary snapped my sks guards on the Kinesis (less than a 1/2 year old though) I emailed them and they sent me a new set.

Ah - I'm not alone then. Seems this may be an issue with Alu frames.

That's got me thinking. The SKS guards on my steel bike are whisper quiet.

The ones on my alu bike rattle relentlessly. I've greased the bolts and checked over for tightness.

I originally had my guards on a steel bike and transferred them only recently to the new Alu one. Then all the problems started

Maybe I should e-mail SKS et al and see what they suggest

Interesting thread, not something I've thought about before. FWIW I have full SKS Chromoplastics on my Titanium road frame and they're completely silent.

Edit to add:

But I did have the same mudguards on my old alu TCR2, no eyes on that frame so I had 'P' clips to allow me to have the mudguards attach to the seatstays and forks. They were quiet, too. Maybe the 'P' clips had a dampening property, because they're lined with rubber.

I'm a CTC member so I e-mailed the ghuru (Chris Juden). He says it's hard tyres + rough roads, not the frame material. And maybe the 35mm SKS plastic isn't the "expensive" chromoplastic used in wider guards. I think he was saying the vibration is somewhat due to the stay positions and that moving those would help - or even adding a third set of stays. I've sent him some pics and asked about rubber bushings at the stay mountings. I'm hoping for a response.

Meantime I'll patch up the old one and try some experiments along the lines suggested.

Well the man at the CTC did come back to me. Apparently my mudguard isn't the chromoplastic type. Its the Bluemels SKS one which is some other kind of plastic. He recommends getting the chromoplastic kind. But I just have a gut feeling this problem won't go away. So I'll be rubberising my mountings I think.
