Still toying with the idea of an off the peg steel frame for my hub gear build. Did like the Cotic Roadrat but the track ends are putting me off a bit. Wiggle are currently offering the Surly Crosscheck frame and forks at @£280 and it seems to fit the bill.

Anyone any experience of this frame, the write ups I've found have been very positive.....thanks.....Al

Never ridden a cross check but all the surly equipment I've used in the past is top quality and well designed/finished - I'm sure you'll not be disapointed by the quality and design of the frame if it fits your needs. Buying a new frame without riding the finished bike is always risky. It would be hard to find one of these fully built and available for a test ride so you'll have to just take the risk if it looks good on paper.

I know it's a different bike but I put a thread up in the Touring section about a Surly Long Haul Trucker and the general level of comment about that Surly frame was excellent.

I'm quite attracted to a hub geared bike at the moment. Planet X offer is very attractive. Even if I didn't like the frame when built up it could be stripped again and put on something else.
Then fleabay the frame. Or sell it to MacB;)

I had one for a while. It's a great frame and amazingly versitile but I had to sell it as it didn't fit:sad:

Joe, can you let me know the fit problems you had, I've been stressing over this and believe I need the 60cm. A guy on YACF kindly measured his 60cm setup and it seems very close to my Giant. Standover within 10mm, TT difference 4mm, wheelbase within 10mm.

Based on what you ordered did it come up larger or smaller than you expected? Or was it just not the bike for you?....cheers.....Al

I found it too long. However, at the time I had really bad posture on the bike and needed a much shorter toptube than I do now that I've improved it.
I believe they come up a little large but don't quote me on that! The Surly site has pretty detailed measurements on it.

I've heard that they're generally long as well. Great for me as I'm one of those short legs and long torso types.
