I've got a suntour freewheel hub with the two notch fitting. I've tried to get it off but only succeeded in stripping the prongs from my tool. As far as I can tell I went about the job in the correct fashion. I located the tool in the notches and secured it with the wheel nut leaving some play to be taken up when it undid.
I put the tool in my biggest, most secure vice and began to undo in the usual way.
It was almighty tight and not giving at all so I was encouraged when I felt some give. Unfortunately it was the tool breaking.

Is it just a shoddy tool or is there something I'm missing. I was undoing it in the conventional direction for undoing.

I slightly heated the whole affair and dowsed it all with penetrating oil and have left it until I can get another tool.

Do I just need more brute force?

The tool might be made of cheese and/or you left too much play* when binding it to the freewheel with the axle resulting in not utilising the full contact areas between tool and freewheel. I would either a) get a Park tool or b) get the LBS to do it. If you are not expecting to have to repeat the exercise in the future the latter option could be no more expensive and have more certainty of success.

* you can always loosen it when it starts to shift

Problem solved. Took the freewheel apart and was able to use a metal plate in a vice as a tool. I tried putting it directly into the vice but this just deformed it a bit. Fortunately it is the wheel and not the freewheel I'm after so I'm not too bothered.
