Hello and thanks for reading, I have a Suntour sc60 fork setup ( about 10 years old) on my MTB which has started Squeaking lately and just doesn't feel right( there is slight play when rocking back and forwards with the brake on) Can anyone tell me is it likely that there used to be any oil damping on this model and if so how much oil would it take Guesstimate or better if you have the info. It has wept a very small amount of oil for a good while but I'm not sure if this was damping oil or just lubricant. I'm struggling to find an info on this model .

Thanks all.

Don't think there is any oil in them, i took a set of shocks apart a few years back, all that's inside are rubbers and springs, it could be the rubbers are breaking up. the rubbers used to be available don't know if they still are, but yours could be differant. i think later shocks have oil in.

If the fork has never been serviced the 'oil' you are seeing is probably dirty gunge that has acculumated. There isn't any oil in them - just grease on the springs and seals. Many of the Suntour forks do have a bit of play in the stanchions. Ideally you should strip the fork down at regular intervals (how ogten depends on now often/where you ride etc) clean everything up and regrease the spring and if need be replace the wiper seals. If this has never been done you will find that the stanchions have corroded away inside and are no longer shiny and smooth. Probably time to replace them.

If it's just on a daily bike - stick some oil in and leave it, or replace with rigid forks. Not worth spending money on cheap forks.

As long as the rocking isn't in the headset

TBH now't wrong with full rigid MTB'ing - I've got an old MTB pre suspension that does the job - bit slow going down as I don't know if it will pitch me to the bottom of the hill. Fast up and XC though !
