Roadpeace: A campaign is being launched to protect cyclists and pedestrians from HGVs after 50 people were killed by lorries in London in the last three years.
The See Me Save Me initiative marks the third anniversary of the death of cyclist Eilidh Cairns, who was killed by a 32-tonne tipper truck in Notting Hill in February 2009.
Relatives of many of the 16 cyclists killed in London last year, including Brian Dorling’s widow Debbie and Ellie Carey’s father Allister, will gather at 2pm on Sunday at the “ghost bike” erected in memory of Eilidh in Notting Hill Gate. They will lay flowers and hold a minute’s silence.
The campaign is demanding the elimination of “blind spots” by fitting HGVs with sensors and cameras, and a move away from safety campaigns focusing on cyclists rather than lorries.
