Progress ...spent the day carefully cellulose stripping paint- the bits of colours left on the frame confirm the flamboyant red & blue colour scheme. I'm now convinced this is a Carlton flyer frame just badged as a Sun, probably at the time they were in the process of being taken over hence the Birmingham badge. Grease port & HB under bb, Italian seat & head lugs, Oscar egg bb lugs & those knitting needle seat stays & of course the carlton serial number J1982 all confirm. I also think they were sprayed in exactly the same colour!... First pics are Carlton bb & headpics found on the net, the others are the Sun you can see where the frame was half dipped in chrome to give the maillot jeune colour scheme.

Is that the one we had fun guessing what it was?

The very same ...! Raleigh group up to its usual old tricks eh? I just need to find a picture of an original one so I can get the colour scheme /stripes /panels /decals correct but the only ones I can find on the net are pictures of mine! lol Surely it can't be the only one left... :'(

Have you looked on bulgier.net/ pics. There is a catalogue from the 70's which might help although it is in yellow and green. If you can't find it that way, the long winded approach is to search vintage Dawes cycles until you find a red and green one in a scrap yard, click on it and scroll down until you find the link.

No Wasp's listed in that catalogue I'm afraid.. Pretty sure the bike is from the early 60's tho' from the Carlton serial number...

If I remember I think even spokesman was a little flummoxed by this one when it was last discussed...
@Illaveago I'm not sure, but If I cant get it spot on as original it doesn't really seem worth spending the (probable) fortune to have it all done a bit wrong...
(in fact secretly I'd actually quite like it done in a bit more discreet style rather than the gaudy Christmas bauble that I think it may well turn out ...ha)

I was thinking that you could possibly find out the colour scheme from traces of colour that you might find on your frame, but going by my Holdsworth, which is silver there are traces of blue underneath the silver, which is odd as the base for the blue is silver.

I know its red frome & forks with blue head, chrome 6" top & down tubes chrome lugs & fork crown from chips on the frame & this catalogue page where the other panels are I don't know. I take it there would be 'something' blue on the seat tube & I guess maybe a blue band on the downtube under the name? (Dawes style) maillot jaune at the front of top tube but there also what appears to be ghost images of 2 parallel stripes on top & down tube which look like they could have been on the chrome bit? all a bit sketchy...
