Sun Rhyno rims

Hi

I need to replace the front rim on my Surly LHT. I read some good things about Sun Rhyno rims, but I was wondering if anyone had any experiences they could share if they have usd them for touring, particularly how long they lasted.
Also, is there a difference between Sun Rhyno and Sun Rhyno Lite and which should I go for?

They are good rims but heavy. I had one on the rear wheel for 6 years (probably about 8000 miles cycling) a while ago and it still had plenty life in it but the hub flange broke and I replaced the whole wheel with something lighter weight. I reckoned I did notice the difference with the weight. I think they would be a bit of overkill for a front wheel and I would suggest a Rigida Grizzly (Carbide Super Sonic version for durability if you are away for a long time).

yes me also on my sherpa no problems rock solid ,but a bit on the heavy side.
i heard good things about velocity dyas rims you should check them out.

I built my bike to handle
Tibet and Carretera Austral in Pategonia. These were the rims of choice to handle anything I would throw at them. No complaints but I haven't made it to either destination - yet. I am hoping for the Carretera Austral next Christmas.

I had the same problem - my rear hub cracked and then completely split in a few places after 3000 miles or so on a long tour. I've since sent photos to the guy who made the wheel (Paul Hewitt) and suggested it might have been too strong - too rigid - and put too much pressure onto the hub, with a full load. He said it was highly unusual but might have been that. That was a Sun Rhyno rim on an XT hub.

I've since replaced both wheels with a set from Spa Cycles, using LX hubs and Rigida Sputnik rims, after a few recommendations (for both the hubs (XT too brittle nowadays, apparently) and the rims). I've yet to tour on them fully loaded but use them for rides/commute/weekend 'tours' and they have been great so far. I would say they do feel a little lighter than the Sun Rhynos were and not sure I'd go back.

The two sets of Sun Rhyno I have had have been good for 18k and 20k+ - built by SJS on 36H XT - never broken a spoke - never been out of true - probably heavy but in the context of a loaded tourer I have never noticed

I have a "lite" on the rear wheel of my commuter - the OEM went out of shape very quickly under my weekly shop - 3yrs and some fairly aggressive shopping loads and it is still round and true

The Rynos are becoming a bit scarce and I if I can get some I will probably go for them for my next set - Sputniks will be my other choice

The issue of newer XT hubs not being as strong as the older ones - mainly the axle - but also the hub itself seems to be a reoccurring theme - I have been very happy with all the XT hubs that I have had – cannot work out if this is a few anecdotal or a systematic problem
