I can only talk from experience (hey, what else can we talk from!) but the Mavic Aksium One disks I have on my Genesis have been bomb proof. Not sure if they'll make you any faster but I've hit some potholes/curbs/small animals that should really have had a bigger impact on their smooth running than has actually happened.

Whether or not they're an "upgrade" from your current set. Or if they'll even take a singlespeed setup, I'm afraid I dont know.

If you are happy to use a single speed conversion kit, then there are a few wheelsets you can use with standard freehubs fitted.
