Errrr.....
Bottom brackets seem a popular topic right now!

My workhorse bike's bottom bracket is knackered. There's loads of play in the spindle and it's creaking when putting the power on for hills and such like. Does anyone know what bottom bracket I'll need to replace it?

Cheers,
Archie

ok, after checking my Subway 1 I can assume that you would need a square tapered bottom bracket like 68x113 like this http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=SHIMBTBR375

To do the job you will need to remove your cranks, using one of these http://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/productdetail.asp?productcatalogue=SHIMTOOL600000000000

you can find both of these elsewhere for cheaper of you search around.

Check out this video on more information of how to do the job.

Cheers for that Ian, you've saved me the bother of finding the bicycle tutor vid for the job.

I'm no expert, but one thing that occurs to me is the subway 8 uses a single front chainring, whereas the 1 will have a double, so this might affect the axle length?

Right-ho, thanks for that.

Next question, is it easy enough to get replacement bolts for the cranks? They're looking a bit rusty so I reckon I might as well replace them while I'm about it.

i'm assuming that you subway 8 is a hub geared bike?
if so, you're right, the BB must match the original in length exactly.

That's right, nexus 8 hub on the rear. No choice then, I'll have to pop the cranks off tomorrow. Thanks for the tip.

I've popped the cranks off tonight to measure up the spindle and it's come up as a 110mm/68, so I'll order in the BB for the job this weekend.

Can any of the learned people say why the spindle length is so critical for hub geared bikes?
