Sturmey Archer gear cables

Has anybody ever used a conventional bicycle gear cable with a Sturmey Archer 3-speed trigger shifter?
They look identical, the only possible difference might be the diameter of the soldered nipple on the end.

yes - but that's the same as a normal gear cable? Or is the nipple a lot thinner?

yeah its a LOT thinner and LONGER , Iit simply wouldnt fit in the shifter

It looks like a standard inner gear cable has been put in mine at some time. I've used it for a few years without any problems but it's now beginning to stick. I'm surprised it worked so well with the nipple just resting on the edge of the shifter!
