Just about to order some spare tubes of the web, they say 26x1.75 - 2.5, which is fine, but then there is the option of 42mm or 52mm - What does that relate to?

I think it is the length of the valve stem. 42mm is the standard size. You will only need the 58mm if you have an exceptionally large wheel rim.

Thanks, it is the valve length indeed. Just worked it out by looking on another site...

I was just about to say that too.
On the tube size, my LBS said it was OK to use a thin tube (say a 1.25-1.75 on a 2.0 tyre) as it just expanded. Others have said they do this too. I dont agree as the tube may be more prone to puncture and if you patch it the patch will probably pop off if the tube expands.
So I go for bigger rather than smaller tubes.
