See the headset I'm using here.
I'm part way through installing my headset. The bearing cups are in the frame - went in easily with the tool. The crown race is on the fork - went on easily when the man at the lbs did it, but crooked when I tried it!
I picked up the remaining pieces, which I had carefully kept in the right order, to finish assembling, and dropped them!
The bits I have left are:
Top cap and star nut - obvious.
The sloping bit at the top in the picture that says 36 degrees on top.
A split metal ring that I think is the compression ring.
A rubber seal that's flat on one side and sloped on the other side, and looks like it's meant to fit the sloping bit.
I've looked at the picture in Zinn's book, but that shows bearings as well. Either my bearings are sealed, or I've managed not to disturb them, but in any case the picture doesn't look exactly like what I've got.
It would make sense to me to put the rubber seal on the upper bearing cup with the flat side down, and the sloping bit on top of that, but I'm not sure about the compression ring. It looks like it should go on first, and slide partly inside the bearing cup below the other 2 bits, but the picture in Zinn has it directly below the stem/spacers.
Help!
