Ive been out to day for a ride, but on my way home I tried to change gear and found it hard to engage a gear as the chain just kept jumping from one gear to another and not engaging with any gear and it took me some time to locate a gear that I could ride in. This is new to me, so do I need my bike looking at by my local bike shop or is it somthing I'm doing wrong?

Most likely the rear mech needs a little adjustment. There is an adjuster screw where the cable enter's the mech. If you tighten clockwise, this will move the rear mech outwards, anti-clock will move inwards. If you look at the bike from the rear, and low down, the top jockey wheel should be exactly in line with a sprocket. If it's not, adjust as above.

It's easy. Google it.

Which is why I didn't think you'd want him/her to start looking for a 'screw' (limit screws, B screw), nevertheless your post was clearly pointing the way.

Loch side.
Could be the inner cable on the bend to the rear mech sticking, if they are complete novice they are better taking it to their lbs.
I agree with you but that's not why I'm replying. Your dog looks like that Boris chappie who lives in London. Are they related?
