I am thinking of stripping and rebuilding my bottom bracket, before I do though are their any special bearings I need or are they all the same? I assume that I may as well fit new ones at the same time. This thread may be totally out of date, as the last time I did this was back in the 80's and I am guessing things have moved on since then.

The reason I am doing it, is that it is clicking when I pedal.

Thanks

Not all BBs are the same - what type do you have?

Looks like a square taper and probably not user-servicable in any meaningful sense. Just as easy to swap out the BB for a new one. Presumably you've confirmed that's where the noise is coming from?

Check for play, but it's a simple swap. Guaranteed to be a cartridge, so remove it with a BB Tool for Shimano compatible BB's and then look for 68 or 73 x 110 or similar.

These are the measurements you need - most likely 68mm x 110 for a SS.

You'll be able to wobble the axle slightly, then its a new one. Only £15 for a UN53/54/5 - try and get the better one as it has an alloy lockring - better than the plastic ones.
