Hey people,
Just wondered if anyone has had the issue I have come across this morning......
Went for a quick spin, during which I knew there was a certain segment on strava that I was hoping to do well on. To say I went for it was an understatement !
But strava doesn't seem to have picked up/found the segment.! I know it's there as I planned my route and my friends use it all the time.
Can only assume the GPS was playing up????Anyone else had this ?

Yes I have had a few missing, I contacted Strava and they managed to sort it, result KOM ! sometimes the GPS tracks don't match the original close enough to record.

See how accurate the track is by zooming in on the satellite view, especially at the start and end of it as these are the most important bits, you then have to match I think it's 90% of the segment.

Just looked back at my route and it turns out that on the route home I went over part of that segment again. Just wondering if that cancelled it out maybe ????

Is it a "smart" phone you are using to record the ride? The GPS can be quite far out with them. I often miss segments with the iphone and you can see the difference on the route, I don't think I would be arsed enough about it to contact strava though.

Yes the iphone does have a few issues with gps and strava, but my Samsung s4 is spot on, even my cheap htc is good

A good read here about smart phones and gps

I wonder if the garmins were on the handlebars and the phones in pockets or in saddle bags under the seat, could make a difference.

A nice unscientific test, I have to state I am firmly in the Anroid camp (never understood all the iphone hype) but I have seen the wavering tracks (not as severe) using my Garmin (Forerunner 410). For me the overwhelming reason for using a Garmin over a smart phone is battery life, plus its a small piece of kit compared to a phone.

Marketing, I just wonder why Mac computers wern't as popular as the IBM something to do with the price difference I think. I have to agree with weight and battery, plus durability.
Though my Garmin 500 can go a bit wayward from time to time

This is through a wooded area.
Also to add that each time you do a segment it can record a slightly different distance from start to end, so you may do a slightly shorter distance quicker, taking the time for the segment it will record you as being quicker.

Yes a bit of heavy tree cover down Scalm Lane plus the road surface is a bit rough, I wonder if bouncing about affects the signal, tall buildings can have the same affect as trees, never noticed the segment length difference I will check it out.

There was a plugin on veloviewer that showed each rides length on each segment, not sure if its working since the new API.
I cant see that bouncing a few inch's would make much difference, I have wondered about the wind though , I know it doesn't but sometimes on a windy ride following the breadcrumb trial it forever seems to go of course.
