Does anyone know why Strava totally changes it's elevation calculations for rides, usually down!! At the end of the ride today it was showing I had climbed 3033 ft and yet an hour later it showed 1693 ft??!!!! I could understand a slight alteration, but that much?!

Strava takes at least a third of my elevation data away from me compared to what my GPS or ridewithgps says.

Bet the chap/ chapesses of the "silly Strava racing" thread know the answer ^_^
"Strava detects devices with barometric altimeters and recognizes the data from that source. Since elevation data derived from a GPS signal is fairly inaccurate, Strava automatically corrects elevation derived from a GPS source by consulting elevation databases to determine the elevation at each point in the activity. Anyone else find this approach silly? I'm fairly sure faulty barometric elevation data is the main source of all those annoying auto-generated phantom 4th cat segments - I don't think GPS elevation data can give this kind of glitch. I wish strava would just force topo map data correction for all rides.

I have the opposite problem, the elevation on my garmin at the end of the ride is roughly the same as my phone app, them when I download it adds at least a 1000ft on. When I use the " correct elevation" button it knocks at least 1500ft off. So I either get lots of Kudos or none.

Garmin Connect has the same problem since an "upgrade" in February, it's so bad I've stopped using the elevation correction feature.

What? Did you actually understand the meaning of that? Chapeau
