Strange Rumbling

Some help please chaps!

I was cleaning my bike Sunday and had it up on the stand spinning the cranks I heard a deepish rumbling noise my instant reaction was my Hollowtech II BB was knackered. So off I went and bought one.

I should have stripped it out I know but it seemed so obviously a BB noise, so stripped down and the BB felt ok turning by hand but replaced it anyway. The noise was still there. The noise sounded like it was coming from the front end of the transmission so the chainset was coming under suspicion as worn.

Checked the rest of the gear stuff RD etc and then I found I have lateral play with my cassette, so took the cassette off and found that the Shimano freehub had some play in it.

Could this be the cause? These are 6 month old Fulcrum Racing 3 with 3000 winter miles in them showing a bit on concave wear on the rims, the reason I mention this is that the freehub alone is £60ish!

So is it an easy job and is it worth the aggro and £60 for another 3k miles out of the rims?

The other strange thing about these wheels is that they never clicked on freewheeling like all my other Fulcrums did, but after 1000 odd miles the freewheel click mysteriously appeared! Thought that might be worth mentioning.

How much play is there between the freehub and the hub shell?

If I were you I would identify precisely what caused the rumbling before action. Checking the chainset/bb/pedals is easy, all you need to do is to spin it with your hands leaving the chain off.

If it is the wheel then looking at the schematic here it could be the freehub lock nut loose or the bearings worn, i.e. not necessarily the freehub itself that needs replacing. In any case there are clear instructions on pg 67/8 etc. for dis-assembly and service and it doesn't look difficult or requiring special tools to me.

Hope it helps.

Thanks, there is quite a bit of play, I checked my old set that have done 8000 miles and no play at all. It is the part that takes the cassette that is wobbly only a few mm. I might have a go at the old wheel and see how many parts fly out!
