Can anyone explain what might be causing this. Had a mechanical a few days ago, had to change the hanger and derailleur and have the wheel trued. Now this has happened.

Help please.

I had the exact same thing yesterday...

I came home on Saturday night after a 30 mile ride with no problems. Headed out with the baby seat on the back last night and after a few miles the chain was a goner.

He's right, no point in messing aroud. Buy a new chain.

How did it happen anyway? Did you ride through a mesolithic ley-line while chanting the wrong kind of shakra?

I wish that had happened it would have been more interesting. The rear mech hanger snapped going up hill sending the derailleur into my wheel and getting destroyed.

So you can't have ridden the bike since the big blowup! A twisted chain is quite common when that happens.

Buy a spare derailleur hanger and put it in a safe place. If the bike falls over on its right side and bends the hanger, DO NOT bend it back as it's brittle and designed to break sacrificially to protect the frame. Replace it.

I bought a new hanger and derailleur yesterday got back and fitted them. Then I realised the chain was twisted. It does ride but is skipping like it needs a new chain and cassette, so that's next.

As others have said knackered chain.

Many of our work bikes have this after some sort of trauma.... The old shimano hg chains seem to be more susceptible than the kmc .

Severe mechanical trauma. Probably happened at the same time as the hanger and dérailleur damage.

I replaced my son's rear mech hanger last night after a small stick jammed in the jockey wheel. That revealed that the derailleur is still OK but the chain is borked like yours. New chain today...

*** UPDATE ***

New chain and cassette for the bike last week. The guy in the shop took one look at the chain and said it was completely knackered better just to replace it. So i treated the bike to a new cassette as well just dont tell the wife.
