ive had my BH for about two months now , I was cleaning the wheels last night and for the first time I noticed that the front and rear spokes were laced differently, the rear as normal but the front are straight from hub to rim , is this sort of usual or are the wheels actually not paired correctly ?

Normal , most low spoke count wheels are like this on the front and non drive side on the rear.

Loch side.
It is an attempt to save weight. Straight-laced spokes are slightly shorter than crossed spokes and some weight is saved.
Straight-laced spokes cannot transmit torque, hence the use of crossed spokes on rear wheels and all disc-braked wheels.

Far be it for me to point out that radial spokes don't cross and therefore cannot be laced. ;)
Maybe you shouldnt point it out ?

The 653 bike has Roval wheels on it, Radial front and Radial/2 cross on the rear (drive side has 2 cross for torque resistance)

Not even crossed spokes have to be laced. Lacing is reversing the final cross, so that the outside spoke passes inside. Cheap, machine-built wheels are sometimes not laced.
