Not to sure?
My missus always fills my drinking bottles full of water before putting them in the cupboard. Now I have half a dozen different colours of bottle and depending on which bike I am going out on, decides which bottle I will use.

So it could be a month or so before a certain bottle is used and of course I flush the bottle out before using it.

Now I think that they shouldn't be filled with water when being stored, but SWMBO insists that if they are stored empty they will smell?

How does everyone keep them??

On another note, if you want a truly brilliant drinks bottle, then get yourself one of these

They really are the dogs dangly bits.

Is there not a danger bacteria could develop in still water ?

The Clean Bottle is a good idea but the number of plugs for it on ITV4 during the Tour got annoying

just leave the empty bottle in the cupboard with the lid off and then the bottle won't smell.

leaving water in the bottles for a couple of month is a huge huge breeding ground for bugs and bacteria

Yes gotta agree i'd never store my bottles when not in use full of water.. Mine all washed, dried and stored in cupboard with lids off.. Never had an issue with smells... You only got to look at a camelback when you forget to clean it after a few weeks.. All sorts of funny coloured stuff starts growing in it....

I use Nuun electrolyte tablets in plain water - they don't stain, or smell after use (no sugar).

Store them empty with the lid on, but the valve open.

I have several 750ml and 500ml bottles and rotate there usage, soon as the ones in use start to look a bit grotty, I clean them and then fill them with water and then add half a sterilising tablet to each bottle and leave them for months in this condition, when emptied and flushed out with clean water, there completely odourless inside and smell fresh.

The tablets I use are the ones for babies bottles, from Wilko's, right cheap, a box of them has so far lasted me nearly 2 years, and being a Yorkshireman, sometimes I tip the contents of one bottle into another, just to help keep the costs down.

Well I hope they aren't like my bottles where, on using them for the first time, I got an unwelcome surprise.

I went to open the top with my mouth on both my Katyusha and AGR2 bottle, and the whole top came off showering me with water (which, was rather refreshing at the time, I'll admit).

I now know better and hold the top down as I do it!

I always store empty with the lid off. I cannot see any logic in storing with water in, for example you would not fill your unused cups and glasses with water in before putting in the cupboard.

Does it matter (to her) if they might develop a smell whilst being stored ... I think I would take my chances and just deal with the smell if it did develop - and bung them through the dishwasher every now and again if they had sat for a long time, on the top shelf. That's how I wash them anyway.
