Bike nicked in Balham!

A bike not being robbed in south London would be news. I would have thought even in a secure area nuke proof precautions would be in order in that shithole. Be nice if it reappears, however having been born and raised in the area I doubt it.

As a SW London resident, I do zero utility cycling. Almost everyone i know who does has had at least one bike nicked. Many others, club or like riders, have also had bikes nicked. When out riding, I never leave my bike out of direct line of sight.

Whereas I do much riding in SW London, pretty much lock my bike up whenever I go out (coffee, shopping, leave bike outside/near Wimbledon or Morden station all day when I go to office). I’ve only had one bike nicked, many years ago in London Bridge. Stupidly used a cable lock outside a bike shop, gone in 15 minutes.
Now I only use a D lock or Bordo with a wheel cable if leaving for any length of time 🤞🤞🤞

How did they get into a secured bike storage?
Probably tailgated somebody with a fob. "Hi mate I forgot my fob today". Then fiddle with a random bike for a bit until nobody's looking before selecting the target bike. It's a bit more awkward if the store needs a fob to exit as well but easy to do the same trick. I'm guessing; this isn't from my experience!

In defense of South London I've never had a bike nicked. I regularly commute in and out of the centre. If double lock a cheap bike unlikely to be targeted especially with a visible Bike register sticker on. Just don't lock up anything worth stealing.

I used to have a car site in Balham 40 years ago, if things were not being nicked it was being vandalised, I guess the area has not changed for the better.

Balham is is now VERY up market from 40 years ago. Houses on the Hever Estate are very desirable. (I bed flat £500k plus).

I know, why did I not buy a few, well I know the answer to that question, I have never wanted to be a landlord.
