Stocking up on winter goodies

I probably should've started this a few weeks ago but hey ho, I need to start getting my winter kit together to see me through the dark and cold commuting season. I haven't got much in the way of winter clothes aside from a well-used base layer and a winter jersey that seems to have gotten shorter. My longs are simple thin ones so I need to get a new pair.

So below is a list of item I think I need, I would be grateful if I could get advice and recommendations on which to buy that is good quality (won't dissolve or break) and is reasonably priced. I suppose I have £150 or so to get it all if that is reasonable.
  1. A good wind-proof yet breathable jacket, this is a must as I can sweat quite a bit. I have heard the Altura Night Vision mentioned but it is more of a waterproof jacket that may impact of breathability.
  2. A decent merino wool base layer, these sell for more than the synthetic fabrics but I believe it would be worth it.
  3. Long sleeved jersey to go over the base layer, as I said I only have my one from last year. It was some CCUK thermal jersey, it seems to have shrunk and I would like one to replace it.
  4. Gloves and socks, I still have my Aldi special winter gloves from last but I want something that will keep the cold out better. My fingers kept going numb so I had to double up with a regular pair of gloves underneath, very bulky and made shifting interesting. As for sock, I only have bog standard thick ones but should I be looking at something cycle-specific?
  5. I would be loking for a good pair of longs to see me through. My last pair was from decathlon and they didn't last too long and weren't really that good at keeping the heat in when the weather got cold, they were cheap though at a tenner a pair. The DHB Roubaix look ideal if a little pricey but if they are any good then it'll be worth to outlay in my eyes.
  6. A pair of glasses with clear lenses for when my dark ones would be of no use.
I think the above is all I need in terms of clothing, I have sorted the front lights out and have settled on which rear ones to get. I will invest in a pair of BBB hardwear overshoes and I am seriously thinking of a pair of Marathon Winter tyres as my commute is down lanes that probably do not get gritted.

I appreciate any suggestions that you may have.

Cheers,

Tom.

I have an altura night vision jacket thats not really water proof, but it is windproof and made of a breathable fabric.

Decathlon do some glasses for £7, you can get clear as well as amber.

1. the type of jacket you want is totally dependent on your style of riding. Mine is rather fast paced, so i use a very light weight Mavic Helium jacket but adding a good base layer and a jersey then it is fine. It also means I use one jacket throughout the year, I use it in autumn and spring with just a jersey underneath.

2. I use a DHB long sleeve zip neck base layer. Very good!

3. I don't bother with the long sleeve jerseys. A long sleeve base layer and the windproof jacket keeps my arms warm enough.

4. Socks, i just wear my normal ones but I add an overshoe. Keeps lots of warmth in the shoe. Gloves, for the winter I have a lobster style glove with lots of padding to keep the warming in. For autumn and spring I have a thinner pain which just help to keep the wind chill off.

5. The DHB Roubaix are good

6. I would suggest getting a pair of glasses with interchangeable lenses, that way you only need one pair for all year round.

I have gone and bought most of what was on my list; I have gotten the overshoes, cycle glasses with a couple of lenses, DHB Roubaix bib shorts, the non-merino zip base layer and the DHB Wisp in Red. That's around £130 spent so far tonight and I still have to buy some rear lights and those winter tyres! My wallet is going to be so empty when the payments clear but it'll be worth it.
