Still got hotfoot

I'd hoped that switching to "proper" road pedals, SPD-SL's from SPD's, would've cured the hotfoot that's been plaguing me ever since I went clipless.
Sadly though, it hasn't.
I've tried two different types of shoe on the SPD's, and some new R1 shoes for the SPD-SL's, but noticed no real difference.
Admittedley, it doesn't seem quite as bad with the SL's, but considering the extra inconvenience of not being able to walk, not having instant cleat pedal engagement etc, it just doesn't seem worth it.

Anything else I can try? (without spending money  )

Incidentally, I don't get any problems MTbing with SPD's, I guess because of the variety of peddaling, seating/standing positions etc?

Have you tried some Specialized Body geometry insoles? They come in three levels of "power" but are supposed to place your foot in the correct position. I have blue (medium) ones and they are fantastically comfortable; I was getting soreness on the outside of my left foot and the feeling that the foot wanted to roll off the pedal, I got some Specialized BG wedges and the insoles and the problem is now mostly sorted.

Incidentally when I was getting all this sorted I discovered that Specialized BG shoes are made to correct a varus or valgus that they reckon 80% of the population has - fine if you are one of the 80% but not if you're in the 20%!

Here's a website that explains it clearly: http://www.primera-sports.com/Template.aspx?prodID=1375

Thanks for the informative post, I will give them a try.

You might have already done this but have you tried moving the cleat back by a couple of mm so that a slightly different part of your foot is doing the pedalling. Remember though that this will need to toughen up before any long rides.

I haven't, specifically.
But, just by trying three different shoe/pedal combos, I've covered three different positions.
I don't think it's the problem, but happy to be corrected if anyone has any experience of it.

+1 for the moving the cleats back towards the centre of the shoe. I moved mine back by a few mm so they're as far back as they can go and it instantly cured foot pain on long rides.

After my 100 the week before last week, I had a bit of a hotspot put it down to my unfitness. I had something to do the next day and over the 32 miles I really felt it made me realise that it was the cleat too far forward. Keeping the alignment as it was I just put it back slightly and went out and the pain was instantly away and my average speeds were rising 0.5-1mph. It might not work for you Panter but its worth an inexpensive trial
